The Anthology of American Folk Music is a six-album compilation released in 1952 by Folkways Records (catalogue FP 251, FP 252, and FP 253), comprising eighty-four American folk, blues and country music recordings that were originally issued from 1927 to 1932. Experimental film maker Harry Smith compiled the music from his personal collection of 78 rpm records. The album is famous due to its role as a touchstone for the American folk music revival in the 1950s and 1960s
Put together by none other than the president of the company, Geoff Stelling, the recording features multiple appearances by Bill Emerson, Chris Warner, Murphy Henry, and a number of others. However, Stelling Banjo Anthology isn't just a banjo album. Each cut also features a number of other players and various combinations of fiddles, guitars, mandolins, and basses. This collection is rich in traditional pieces like "John Hardy" and "Shuckin' the Corn" and modern classics like Emerson's "Little Juniata" and Don Reno's "Banjo Special.
However, Stelling Banjo Anthology isn't just a banjo album. One also wouldn't want to miss Warner's romp through Gary and Randy Scruggs' "Trousdale Ferry Rag," a tour de force in banjo picking. Since most of these tunes last.
