Like Bruckner, Eugen Jochum was a devout Catholic, and in his recordings of this master’s music there is a tenderness, spirituality, and quality of love that is unique in the discography. Though he refused to rank Bruckner the symphonist as highly as Brahms, Jochum clearly saw a world of meaning in these works, and his two integral recordings of the nine symphonies deserve a place in any serious collection.

I became familiar with this on a flight back west from the east coast. As soon as I got home, I looked for the album and was astonished at the low price. The musical assortment is great and the quality very good.

After Haitink's complete recordings of the Bruckner Symphonies (mid 60's - early 70's), he re-recorded some symphonies at the start of the digital era with his Concertgebouw Orchestra (nrs. 8 & 9) and started to record a new series with the Wiener Philharmoniker. As ever under the baton of Haitink, the orchestral playing of the Wiener Philharmoniker is of the highest quality.
