Carl Nielsen's Concerto for Violin and orchestra, op. 33 was written for Hungarian violinist Dr. Emil Telmányi, Nielsen's son-in-law, in 1911. The concerto has three movements, including a slow prelude. The Concerto for Violin and Orchestra, Opus 33, was not an easy assignment for Nielsen. He began writing it in the summer of 1911 in Bergen, Norway, where he was spending some time at the invitation of Nina Grieg.

Violin Sonatas (Grieg). Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg wrote three violin sonatas. They are all examples of his musical nationalism, since they all contain references or similarities to Norwegian folk song. The three Sonatas for violin and piano by Edvard Grieg were written between 1865 and 1887. Violin Sonata No. 1 in F major, Op. 8 was written in Copenhagen in 1865. 2 in G major, Op. 13 was written in Oslo (then Christiania) in 1867. 3 in C minor, Op. 45. Grieg began composing his third and final violin sonata in the autumn of 1886 The sonata remains the most popular of the three works, and has established itself in the standard repertoire.

Having finished his third symphony (CNW 27) and music for the play Hagbarth og Signe (CNW 12), Nielsen started on a concerto for violin and orchestra. Parts of the work were composed in Norway during summer 1911. Back home in Copenhagen, the work started to give him trouble which he found challenging but at the same time also inspiring.
