1776 is a musical with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and a book by Peter Stone. The story is based on the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It dramatizes the efforts of John Adams to persuade his colleagues to vote for American independence and to sign the document. The production was nominated for five Tony Awards and won three, including the Tony Award for Best Musical

It's pretty clear that a great many changes were made for the film - various cuts and rewrites and such - and this album sounds like it might have been recorded on stage instead of in a studio (there's a kind of echo or hollowness or maybe distance; my untrained ear says "they were in a big space. The music is great! William Daniels, Ron Holgate, and Ken Howard are the same between both this soundtrack and the film. However, after listening to the first three tracks, and half of the Lees of Old Virginia, something hit me, hit me hard.
