I’d not heard of Michiru Aoyama until I stumbled across the absolutely gorgeous Brilliant Days, his new LP for Californian label Mirae Arts. Shimmering with refracted light, Brilliant Days is best listened to on a brilliant day, basking in the sun, amidst the trees and the birds.

It comes courtesy of Japanese composer Michiru Aoyama, an ambient artist who counts Ryuichi Sakamoto among his fans and has released on labels including Organic Industries and Somehow Recordings. His Brilliant Days LP consists of two long tracks, each taking up a side of vinyl, that glide along on spacious drones. It brings to mind the work of Sakamoto himself as well as a more tranquil rendering of the psychedelia of artists like Cankun and Panda Bear. Michiru Yamane (Japanese: 山根ミチル Hepburn: Yamane Michiru, born September 23, 1963) is a Japanese video game composer and pianist. She is best known for her two decades of work at the gaming company Konami, particularly with the Castlevania series. She left the company in 2008 to become a freelance composer. Yamane grew an interest in music at an early age, practicing on the electric organ and piano. She studied composition in college and began working as a composer for Konami in 1988
