One Step Closer is the seventh release and fifth studio album of Colorado-based jam band, The String Cheese Incident. Released in June 2005, and containing thirteen original tracks with guest songwriting collaborations, the album was produced by Malcolm Burn at a studio in Boulder, Colorado. One Step Closer was a return to the more roots-based music of earlier String Cheese Incident fare, while still retaining some of the pop sensibility of previous studio albums

The String Cheese Incident (SCI) is an American band from Crested Butte and Telluride, Colorado, formed in 1993. The band is composed of Michael Kang (acoustic/electric mandolin, electric guitar, and violin), Michael Travis (drums and percussion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar, lap steel guitar, and electric slide guitar), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano, organ, Rhodes, and accordion), and Keith Moseley (bass guitar), and, in 2004, Jason Hann (auxiliary percussion).

The second of the two shows in Chicago proved to be a fine gig, though not as awe-inspiring as the April 12th date - but how could it be? On purely musical terms, there are no weak moments in this triple-CD package: The song selection is inspired, the playing is no less than crack - you have to expect that from String Cheese Incident on every gig now - and the fellas have their hearts in it, to be sure. Opening a gig with Ralph Stanley's "How Mountain Girls Can Love" offers something that some people forget about SCI: These cats can actually play bluegrass.
