Once is the fifth studio album by Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, released on 7 June 2004 by Spinefarm Records and Nuclear Blast. It is the last album to feature Tarja Turunen on lead vocals. The album cost nearly €250,000 to make, (1,000,000 including the videos) which made it Finland's most expensive recording ever until the release of Nightwish's next album, Dark Passion Play, which cost over €500,000 to produce.

I don't know if it is because the album was recorded in one session, and under rushed circumstances as the liner notes indicate, but the music here is prime Coltrane Quartet. The untitled originals especially so. I am a huge fan of every period of Coltrane's music, but more so of his last music from 1965 til his death. Do not make the mistake of not getting the Deluxe version. It is another full album worth or remarkable takes on several of the songs, and the versions of "Impressions" on it might be better than on the album itself. It is worth every penny.

Included on the album-which comes either as a single-disc version or a double-disc with alternate takes, both including extensive liner notes by historian Ashley Kahn-is a sunny, bright-tempo melody (the theme from Vilia, written by the Hungarian composer Franz Lehár for the operetta The Merry Widow ); a downtempo, minor-key, semi-standard ( Nature Boy, from th. It is possible to take in Both Directions At Once, some of it middling by Coltrane’s standards and some of it extraordinary by anyone’s, without much thought about sellability or progress. In an ideal case, both qualities are overrated anyway. This is an ideal case.

Two of the original songs are untitled, their melodic themes are perhaps a shade fuzzy, the band is vigorous but loose.

And so, the once-lost is found, rescued from Coltrane's quarter-inch home reference tapes found in his first wife's estate. The original masters were either trashed in the purge of Impulse when its parent label, ABC-Paramount, moved to Los Angeles, or when it was purchased by MCA in 1979, or just lost to the cold neglect of man and time. Either way, the album is an essential bridge, a creatively cohesive whole that makes one wonder why Thiele and Van Gelder didn't argue strenuously for its release at the time.
