Where Africa Meets the Orient, an album of essentially Middle Eastern music from the English cultural troupe Noor Shimal. Two members are British folklorists, one an Algerian expatriate, and one a guest from North Africa. The lead vocals are taken by Vivienne Corringham, who does a good job of emoting through the works, but there is a bit missing in the full performance that makes her sound a bit dry. Her accent seems to block the ability to get the proper throatiness for a Middle Eastern song

Founded by Terri Suha Massa, a teacher of beginning and intermediate Middle Eastern dance at the Mary Siah Recreation Center in Fairbanks, AK, Noor Shimaal has amassed a vast repertoire that includes traditional and non-traditional music from Nubia, West Algeria, Turkey, West Sudan, Maghreb, Azerbaijan, Tunisia, and Egypt.
Before Noor Shimaal, Dogan-Corringham had released several solo albums, including Popular Turkish Folk Songs. This provided such an authentic reading of the Turkish music tradition that it sold well in Turkey. Two further solo releases included a CD of Greek rebetika music and a crossover album, Avant, featuring the complementary slide guitar of Mike Cooper. Where Africa Meets the Orient (CD).
