James Wesley "Red" Holloway (May 31, 1927 – February 25, 2012) was an American jazz saxophonist. Born in Helena, Arkansas, Holloway started playing banjo and harmonica, switching to tenor saxophone when he was 12 years old. He graduated from DuSable High School, where he had played in the school big band with Johnny Griffin and Eugene Wright, and attended the Conservatory of Music, Chicago. Red Holloway, a tenor and alto saxophonist who took his bluesy Chicago sound to Europe, South America and Japan and played with music royalty like Billie Holliday, B. B. King, and Muddy Waters, died on Saturday in Morro Bay, Calif. He was 84. The cause was complications of kidney failure, his manager, Linda Knipe, said. Mr. Holloway’s music career began in the 1940s and encompassed styles from bebop to fusion to R&B. His powerful, brassy notes and chunky vibrato swung, regardless of the genre.
