Thus, Chance became James White (as a nod to James Brown), the Contortions became the Blacks, and his music, previously a twisted, experimental brand of avant-jazz, became a disco/funk/free jazz hybrid. As bizarre as the fusion of Albert Ayler and Giorgio Moroder might sound, Off White works primarily because Chance commits to both sides of the music.

Off White is a 1979 album by American no wave band James White and the Blacks. Zilkha gave little direction and asked the band for its own take on the genre. Anya Phillips, Chance's manager and girlfriend, came up with the idea to rename James Chance and the Contortions to James White and the Blacks for the album

An album by James Chance AKA James White, the ultimate funk-noise purveyor. One of the many projects to which Robert Quine lent his guitar skills after the dissolution of the Voidoids. Quine only plays on Almost Black Pts. 1+2 and Off Black, it's Jody Harris on the rest of the album. I can't help but brag that I have this on vinyl.

I own the UK version (ZE33033) and the US Version (ZE 33-003) and A1 is different. The US version has the spiced up Disco version. I also own the 12inch for Contort Yourself, and that is a slightly different version from the UK release, without disco beat.

Have both U.S. ZEA33-0033 and Canadian press ZEA33-0033, and the below review information about alternate disco beat versions is incorrect, they are identical. The Contort Yourself 12" U.S. ZEA 12-004 does have the alternate mix.

oh holy sh#t . ths is a far out record . HEAT WAVE is my favorit on it . Nice reggae feel and female singing (By the Coconuts ,if i remember that well enough) another highlight is this song about bondage with this girl talking on the phone while doing it. that was Lydia Lunch. NO NEW YORK they called this in the press-kinda avantgarde early 80ies style. james chance made another 3 records . the last as a Mambo Band-leader and disappeared out of the music scene.

Note that there are two different releases of this album. The difference is in the mix of the first track (Contort Yourself). The original version? is a 'straight' James White mix, the second version? has a disco beat underneath. The disco version is produced by August Darnell, the original version is produced by James White. I seem to remember that the disco mix version was the Candian pressing of the album, and the original version was the US pressing. Unfortunately I do not own the albums any more so I cannot check this for you.
