TFCF (short for Theme From Crying Fountain) is the eighth studio album by Liars, released on August 25, 2017, through Mute Records. Angus Andrew is the only original member of Liars to feature on the album, following the departures of Julian Gross and Aaron Hemphill in 2014 and 2017 respectively

Now working solo, Liars’ Angus Andrew looks back on the dissolution of his group with a strange, often contradictory album conceived in self-imposed isolation. It would also prove to be the last Liars album written as a group. Following the death of their creative relationship, the founding duo of Liars was reduced to a solo act. Andrew, the towering, de facto frontman, soldiered on with the project, relocating from . to his native Australia and treating his newfound artistic autonomy like a golden opportunity for revitalization.

A brief summary of things to be said, then: (a) unlike previous Liars albums, there’s a heavy reliance here on acoustic instrumentation, as well as the use of samples and field recordings, (b) which are signs, more concrete now than before, of yet another move to a different country, to a different environment - to the bush, to a national park north of Sydney, (c) and Angus Andrew (now the only remaining Liar after an apparently amicable if not easy separation) lives there. Liars are true sound pioneers. On their 8th album, this Australia via Los Angeles band reaffirms themselves as one of the few electronic groups to produce continuously intelligent, soulful songs with an avant-futuristic insight. They incorporate pop melodies & experimental vibrations, rhythmic beats & atmospheric it all into a farrago of unusually warm (for electronic music) foggy eccentricity. The album features incredible production and sound staging; it’s one of the best sounding albums I’ve heard in a while. TFCF is an album of fantastic psychedelic stoner music built on transportive soundscapes and wiggly-warm alien beats.

Liars’ 2006 album Drums Not Dead represented the apex of his work, a concept album about a fictional mountain’s relationship to the band’s percussive sound. TFCF certainly fits more with the latter. The departure of fellow founding member Andrew Hemphill looms large over the scattershot new album

Solitude allowed Andrew room to ruminate and experiment, and the sonic leaps he makes on TFCF might have taken several albums to accomplish with a fuller band. These sparse, atmospheric songs re-orient themselves constantly: "The Grand Delusional" begins as an eerie campfire song complete with the sounds of the bush, then a woozy drum pattern takes it in a completely different direction.

Ryan Feyre August 29, 2017. TFCF is atmospheric and quirky enough to never be stale or boring. The instrumentation and lyrics are so abstract and so out of this world, to the point where Liars makes the Fleet Foxes record from earlier this year less complex. With so much experimentation riddled throughout the album, there obviously was certain aspects that could have been ironed out a bit better.
