Brahms: Sextet No. 2, Andante excerpt from Sextet No. 1 Op. 8, 36. Import, Live. For quite a few years I've loved the live performance from 1990 of Brahms' String Sextet that was a collaboration between the Alban Berg Quartet, the dominant quartet in Europe for two decades, and their predecessors, the Amadeus Quartet. Each group contributed three members to make a sextet, and they play with unmathced passion. After hearing that performance, one never thinks of Brahms as a plushy Victorian again.

The String Sextet No. 1 in B♭ major, Op. 18, was composed in 1860 by Johannes Brahms and premiered in Hanover by an ensemble led by Joseph Joachim. It was published in 1862 by the firm of Fritz Simrock. The sextet is scored for two violins, two violas, and two cellos. The sextet has four movements: Allegro ma non troppo, in 34 time. Andante, ma moderato, in D minor and 24 time (and in variation form). Scherzo: Allegro molto in F major and 34, with a central Animato trio section.
