Oozing Wound is Zack Weil (guitar, vocals), Kevin Cribbin (bass), and Kyle Reynolds (drums), young men that have established themselves in the volatile Chicago underground in a short time, playing in Cacaw, Unmanned Ship, ZATH, Bad Drugs, and countless other groups that have populated packed, sweaty basements and lofts throughout the city. Simultaneously hilarious and terrifying, their debut album, Retrash, is made for people who have no faith in melody and happiness, and no resistance to heavy riffage.

Oozing Wound came to be on Thrill Jockey after sharing a bill with Brian Chippendale’s Black Pus. Three records later, High Anxiety finds Oozing Wound’s songs have become more complex, their attacks more ferocious, and bass and guitar lines more captivating. The album was recorded in four days at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio studio. The trio ripped through live-tracking and overdubs, leaving space to experim. LP pressed on virgin vinyl with an artworked inner sleeve and free download card. Oozing Wound is a Chicago trio that features singer-guitarist Zack Weil, bassist Kevin Cribbin and drummer Kyle Reynolds. All are veterans of the Chicago music landscape, having played in bands like Cacaw and Bad Drugs. But based on what I hear on this album, which is the band’s debut full-length, Oozing Wound is the project these three guys were made for. Retrash opens with a song that couldn’t announce the band’s intentions any more clearly: Everyone I Hate Should Be Killed. A squall of feedback gets things going, and then we’re off to the thrashing, head-banging races  . Retrash is a relatively short album, with seven songs that fly by in just a little more than a half-hour. That length feels just about right. If there were three or four more songs here, the album might have overstayed its welcome.
