Following a brief dalliance with Disco, Horn made his mark as one half of oddball duo The Buggles, whose proto-Daft Punk 45 'Video Killed The Radio Star' bubbled to the top of the UK singles chart in 1979, then as a member of Yes, when he and fellow Buggle Geoff Downes were drafted in to replace vocalist Jon Anderson and keyboard player. It was a frankly bizarre development, destined to alienate Yes diehards, although it resulted in the Prog institution's sporadically brilliant tenth album, Drama  . Yet listening to Plastic today, the album sounds like unfinished business, a series of good ideas in need of elaboration, and this is precisely what Adventures In Modern Recording delivers. In terms of both sound and songwriting, it's vastly more sophisticated and satisfying than its predecessor.

Adventures In Modern Recording is something of a lost classic, with great vocals by Trevor Horn and a sparkling electronic sound that is completely in-step with the prevailing electro mood of the pop charts in 2010. Alongside all the b-sides and remixes of the era, Horn has personally selected several previously-unheard demo recordings including 'Videotheque' (a Top 20 hit produced by Trevor - the following year for Dollar) and 'We Can Fly From Here' (Parts 1and 2), originally written for and performed by Yes, as bonus tracks. I love this album and was looking forward to having the 2011 Moving on Vinyl pressing. What I recieved was the most disgusting, ripped up, destroyed piece of mail to end up on my front porch. I blame half on the seller and half on the USPS.

With a recording contract with Island secure, The Buggles recorded their debut studio album, The Age of Plastic, throughout 1979. Initially, the demo of "Video Killed the Radio Star" featured vocals by Tina Charles, who also helped fund the project. Released in November 1981, Adventures in Modern Recording involved Horn experimenting with numerous production techniques, especially with the heavy use of sampling with the Fairlight CMI, with instruments from the computer such as the drums on "Inner City" and the big band jazz sounds on "Vermillion Sands". These same sampling techniques would later be used in records he produced such as Slave. to the Rhythm by Grace Jones, Yes's 90125, Art of Noise's The Seduction of Claude Debussy and Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Welcome to the Pleasuredome.
