Musical Youth is a British Jamaican reggae band formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England. They are best remembered for their successful 1982 single "Pass the Dutchie", which became a number 1 hit around the world. The band recorded two studio albums, and released a number of successful singles throughout 1982 and 1983, including a collaboration with Donna Summer. Musical Youth earned a Grammy Award nomination before disbanding in 1985 after a series of personal problems. The band returned in 2001 as a duo.
Musical Youth formed in 1979 at Duddeston Manor School, Birmingham, England. This pop/reggae influenced group, featured two sets of brothers, Kelvin and Michael Grant, plus Junior and Patrick Waite. Their massive 1982 hit "Pass The Dutchie" was the first of their songs to capture the public's imagination.
Musical Youth crashed into the British scene with all the presumption, exuberance, and flash o. .well, youth itself, storming to the top of the . chart in the fall of 1982 with "Pass the Dutchie," their irrepressible cover of the Mighty Diamonds' Jamaican smash "Pass the Kutchie. It was swiftly followed by the exuberant "Youth of Today," the song that titled their debut album, which duly arrived in December.
