A trench is a type of excavation or depression in the ground that is generally deeper than it is wide (as opposed to a wider gully, or ditch), and narrow compared with its length (as opposed to a simple hole). In geology, trenches are created as a result of erosion by rivers or by geological movement of tectonic plates.

If you are expecting tales of carnage and courage, this is not your book. It's a somewhat academic consideration of the rise of storm-trooper like assault tactics. Unless you are genuinely interested in tactical theory and how it develops, this may be a somewhat dull read. It has some detailed sections on weapons such as one on grenades, flamethrowers and gas, and describes how these came to be used, using a number of brief quotations from solders involved.

When trench warfare really got going, trenches were used as lines of communication and preparation for attacks into No Mans Land. Trenches inched toward each other so that opposing forces had a place to feel somewhat protected before battles. Of course, if a large shell exploded behind and close to the trench, men were buried alive. I think the fear of death going over the top would be muted, living with death every minute of every day, and that I would welcome the chance to leave the mud and fear, embrace the wild and ferocious mind of a warrior who grips their fear as tightly as their rifle, and get moving.
