With Foundation Sounds, Eric Matthews has created a breathy, bombastic collection of sentimental pop songs. Similar to previous recordings, brass, strings, and woodwinds (all played by Matthews) embroider his confessional lyrics and anguished acoustic guitar strumming. Matthews flees (yes, flees) the fragility of typical indie rock vocals in favor of a multi-tracked, breathy/breathless delivery that glazes his often overwrought words with earnestness. For a few songs, this approach is convincing, even beautiful.

Eric Matthews began his serious recording career as one half of the band Cardinal. Cardinal was formed with Australian singer-songwriter Richard Davies in 1992 while both lived in Boston, Massachusetts. Cardinal introduced Matthews as a t and arranger while Davies contributed most of the songwriting. In 2005, Matthews released his third solo record, entitled Six Kinds of Passion Looking For An Exit, and in 2006 another album entitled Foundation Sounds. In the summer of 2006, Matthews announced that he and a guitarist from Cleveland named Christopher Seink had formed a new instrumental band called Seinking Ships.

The work of Eric Matthews was a direct reaction to the lo-fi recording practices so prevalent throughout the alternative music scene of the 1990s; while many of the decade's artists trafficked in a defiantly ragged, do-it-yourself aesthetic, Matthews' records grew out of orchestral theories and practices, and revelled in the stately elegance of warm harmonies and lush arrangements.
