Catharsis is the ninth studio album by American heavy metal band Machine Head, released on January 26, 2018. 1997), and is the final Machine Head studio album to feature drummer Dave McClain and guitarist Phil Demmel, both of whom left the band less than a year after its release.

Machine Head have released some groundbreaking and influential albums in their long career. Their 1994 debut Burn My Eyes hit the scene like a ton of bricks, and 2007's The Blackening is a classic. That brings us to their latest album, Catharsis. Catharsis will certainly be Machine Head's most polarizing album to date. There's a regular album length's worth of excellent songs, but the quality of Catharsis is diluted by that other 30 minutes or so and hampered by a lack of cohesiveness. External and public controversy aside, the aforementioned ambition of Catharsis is a very real aspect of the album. Indeed, the surfacing of hardcore, and hip-hop elements – as well as the ever-expanding nu metal pandemic – by all means spell for an intriguing and potentially career-defining release. Unfortunately, Catharsis comes off as desperately sloppy, and an unfortunate waste of potential. Straight up, Catharsis is new. Having learnt from 2014’s, Bloodstone & Diamonds flaw, it does not seek to be Locust .

Machine Head have announced their first major tour of the upcoming year, while also revealing that their next studio album will be titled Catharsis. Singer/guitarist Robb Flynn says, "It's been far too long since we've demolished venues in America.

With each part of Machine Head firing on all cycles, the album starts off with the expected heavy grind stylings of Volatile. Packing a hefty first punch, it spins completely around into the title-track, which is a clean vocal harmonizing, very Nu Metal style. The Nu Metal sound, complete with rapping vocals, is heavily repeated throughout most of Catharsis. While it may seem they have relapsed a bit to their late nineties style, there are many more surprises to be had on the album that won’t let it settle for just mediocre and typical.
