Jazz sous les pommiers ("Jazz under the apple trees") is an annual week-long jazz festival in Coutances, France. The festival was first held in 1982, and is usually staged during the Feast of the Ascension, in May. The festival was started by Thierry Giard and Gérard Houssin. By 2006 over 1,000 concerts had been held. The festival of 2010 was attended by 37,000 spectators. In 2011 the festival celebrated its 30th anniversary by inviting musicians from previous festivals.

It could only happen in France: we are sitting in an airy hall as four black-clad musicians play what I can only describe as funky medieval jazz on a mix of exotic wind instruments and percussion. Around them wander a youth and maiden in white, wafting scent-impregnated strips of linen on long poles. Left and right they sway, dispersing the whiff of cloves, then citronella, passing mandarins. In the Concert des Parfums those smells are designed to influence the course of the improvised music. I am in the front row and quietly relieved I did not have the haricots blancs at lunchtime
