Piano Concerto No. 4 In C-Minor, Op. 44. –Camille Saint-Saëns. Saint-Saens, Faure, Robert Casadesus, Leonard Bernstein, The New York Philharmonic Orchestra - Piano Concerto No. 4, Ballade For Piano And Orchestra, Three Preludes ‎(LP, Album).

favor of the deft dovetailing of piano and orchestra. This use of the piano as a concertante instrument would be taken up by Vincent d'Indy in his Symphonie sur un chant montagnard française (1886) and in turn, be adopted as far afield as Ferruccio Busoni's massive five-movement Piano Concerto (1904). The strings open with a menacing dotted figure in unison, answered by the piano with a plaintively drooping phrase whose dialogue gives way to a second theme introduced by pizzicato woodwinds and strings. Saint-Saëns: Piano Concerto No. 2; Franck: Symphonic Variations.

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (French: ; 9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. His best-known works include Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso (1863), the Second Piano Concerto (1868), the First Cello Concerto (1872), Danse macabre (1874), the opera Samson and Delilah (1877), the Third Violin Concerto (1880), the Third ("Organ") Symphony (1886) and The Carnival of the Animals (1886).

Variations Symphoniques for Piano & Orchestra. Performer: Alicia de Larrocha, Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos. Orchestra: London Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor: Lawrence Foster. Casadesus and Ormandy do it at breakneck speed; it is propulsive and high octane, and much shorter than other interpretations. De Larrocha and Foster have a totally different vision of the Concerto: slower, more lyrical, sometimes taking it easy. The mysterious-sounding section 11 minutes is done with shimmering textures that present an absolutely lovely sound, the piano almost dancing with its dotted rhythms. This is unfortunate because de Larrocha has programmed Gabriel Faure’s Fantasie for piano and orchestra, one of my candidates for the list of neglected masterpieces. This brooding and lush composition, almost fifteen minutes in length, was written late in life and is very beautiful.
