Top of the Pops" is a song by the American alternative rock group The Smithereens. It is the first single released in support of their fourth album Blow Up. All songs written by Pat DiNizio, except where noted. European 7" single (204 558 7). "Top of the Pops" – 4:32. Poor Little Pitiful One" – 3:33. European CD single (CDP 650). Top of the Pops" – 4:32. 11 is the third full-length album by The Smithereens, released on October 18, 1989 (see 1989 in music). It includes the Billboard Top 40 single "A Girl Like You". The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in June 1990. The album title was inspired by the film Ocean's 11, "with a little push from Spinal Tap's famous line, "This one goes to 11", according to guitarist Jim Babjak.

They did have a lot of singles that performed well on the charts but their albums didn't do as well. Many of their songs were Beatlesque but with more rock, somewhat similar to . but more pop. This best of compilation didn't make Billboard's Top 200 chart. The album opens with "Beauty and Sadness", when you listen closely it sounds similar to the Beatles "Ticket to Ride". The next song, "Strangers When We Meet", has a distinct Top 40 sound.

Released every couple of months, ‘Top Of The Pops’ and ‘Hot Hits’ sold almost underneath the radar for some years, until a brief change in the chart eligibility rules allowed the titles into the main album countdown. Thus, early in August 1971, ‘Hot Hits 6’ reached No. 1 and then, two weeks later, ‘Top Of The Pops 18’ did the same, incongruously stealing the top spot from the Moody Blues’ ‘Every Good Boy Deserves Favour

The Smithereens' first two albums, Especially for You (1986) and Green Thoughts (1988), were both crammed full of catchy songs, from the head-bopping "Strangers When We Meet" to the smoldering "Drown in My Own Tears". The popularity of the Smithereens peaked with their crunchier third album, 1989's 11. It reached number 41 on the Billboard album charts, while also spawning the Top 40 hit single "A Girl Like You"
