With The Beatles carried on where Please Please Me had left off, melding more Lennon-McCartney originals with further highlights from their stage set. It also included the song-writing debut of their twenty-year old, Lead Guitarist, George Harrison. A convicted debater could plausibly make the case that the Beatles aren’t the best rock band ever. Film studio United Artists did, and they centered this album on eight songs from the . record – the seven tracks heard in the movie and "I'll Cry Instead. A Hard Day's Night was filled out with four George Martin-arranged instrumentals of Beatles tunes, which were also featured in the movie.

The stark cover photo meant to convey the increased seriousness of the band, and indeed With the Beatles is a slight step forward in terms of sophistication from Please Please Me. This is partially because the album was recorded in three months rather than (mostly) in a single day, and Martin often double tracked the band’s vocals to achieve a slightly more robust, richer overall sound.
