Milestones (CL 1193) is a studio album by American jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis, recorded with his "first great quintet" augmented as a sextet. It was released in 1958 by Columbia Records. Tenor saxophonist John Coltrane's return to Davis' group in 1958 coincided with the "modal phase" albums: Milestones and Kind of Blue (1959) are both considered essential examples of 1950s modern jazz. Davis at this point was experimenting with modes – scale patterns other than major and minor.
The rest is all blues in any flavor you wish you call your own. For starters, there's the steaming bebop blues of "Dr. Jackle," recorded in 1955 for a Prestige session with Jackie McLean.
Milestones was Miles Davis' third Columbia release after 'Round About Midnight (1957) and Miles Ahead (1957). The recording was made during one of Davis' most creatively intense periods, preceding his recording of the soundtrack for Ascenseur Pour L'echafaud (Fontana, 1958) in late 1957 and the subsequent recordings of Cannonball Adderley's Somethin' Else (Blue Note, 1958) and the repertoire that would become Kind of Blue (Columbia, 1959). Milestones is significant as a creative hinge period between Davis' bebop/hard bop period and his future modal period
Milestones of a Jazz Legend - Miles.
Milestones was Davis' first album to employ a sextet. Besides Davis himself, the featured players were Red Garland on piano (replaced on Kind of Blue by the incomparable Bill Evans), Paul Chambers on bass, Philly Joe Jones on drums (who also left the sextet before Kind of Blue, replaced by Jimmy Cobb), and most importantly, the dual saxophonists Julian "Cannonball" Adderley and John Coltrane. No wonder everyone on Milestones delivers such a great performance, and no wonder Miles Davis, in addition to redefining jazz trumpet and creating some of the most memorable albums in history, also helped to develop some of the most talented musicians jazz has ever seen.

In my opinion, I thought that "Seven Steps To Heaven" was Miles' best record. Many people didn't like that it, but I think the compositions were alot better, three of them being, the title track, "So Near, So Far," and "Joshua.
Miles Davis – trumpet Julian Cannonball Adderley – alto saxophone John Coltrane – tenor saxophone William Red Garland – piano Paul Chambers – bass Philly Joe Jones – drums. Not nearly as famous as Kind of Blue, but featuring the same horn section as the tour de force album recorded in February and March of 1959, Milestones is an excellent precursor to Kind of Blue. Certainly the latter album is universally known as one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, jazz album ever recorded, but listening to Milestones shows the transition period that Miles and his group were in.
