Pre-Millennium Tension is the second album from English rapper and producer Tricky, released in 1996. It was a conscious effort by Tricky to depart away from the trip hop label with which critics had described his previous music. The album was well received by critics, being named the ninth best record of the year in the 1996 Pazz & Jop poll.

Pre-Millennium Tension is the third album from Tricky, released in 1996. In an interview, Tricky said that he hated being stuck with the trip-hop tag so "That's why I did Nearly God, and that's why I did Pre-Millennium Tension. You can't see them as trip-hop albums.

Pre-Millennium Tension restated the possibilities for British hip-hop, its influence creeping as far and wide as Burial and Radiohead. Pre-Millennium Tension Tricky. By the time Adrian Thaws began working on his second album as Tricky, the languid electronic soul of his debut, Maxinquaye, was being polished by other artists into something even more palatable at dinner parties. Eager to shake the trip-hop tag, Tricky made his own music increasingly unsettling: Can hardly breathe, he utters in a smoke-damaged drawl against backward guitars and rumbling beats on Vent, heralding a murky, claustrophobic, and fractious 45 minutes

This is spilling over with genius. Industrial abrasiveness rubs up with dub and hip hop. And Tricky and Martina channel some voodoo throughout all the tracks. This being his second album (under the name Tricky; Nearly God was actually his second), it is a drastic departure from the dilapidated hip hop of Maxinquaye. Some great tracks throughout! Essential!
