Out of the Blue is the ninth studio album by English pop rock group Mike + The Mechanics that was released on 5 April 2019 by BMG. The album features reworkings of some of their greatest hits along with three new tracks ("One Way", "Out of the Blue", and "What Would You Do"). The album debuted at number 7 on the UK Albums Chart, selling 7,591 copies in the first week. It is Mike + The Mechanics' fifth top 10 album in the United Kingdom.

Out of the Blue finds Mike + The Mechanics - which, in 2019, claims Mike Rutherford as its only original member - revisiting their catalog with the assistance of their 2010s vocalists Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar. The party line behind Out of the Blue is that the group discovered new ways of playing old songs while on tour supporting 2017's Let Me Fly, so they decided to head into the studio to document these versions

Out of the Blue opens with the slowly and smoothly inundating, Sophistipop buildup of the mid-tempo One Way. The calming and familiar mood flows flawlessly into the ensuing title track, albeit the slight shift in the tempo is noticeable. The rhythm changes a bit further with the Dance Pop–styled What Would You Do?, whose jazzy and loungy melody prepares the listener to the following string of new versions of select songs from the band’s discography, starting with the Gospel-tinged The Living Years. The soothing mood continues with another goldmine, Another Cup of Coffee. Now, the perfect mid-album stomper needs no further introduction-the iconic All I Need Is a Miracle -enough to send nostalgic shivers down the spine of any self-proclaimed ’80s kid.

It’s titled Out Of The Blue and it’ll launch on April 5 on CD, Deluxe CD, LP and on digital and streaming platforms. The album will feature re-workings of some of the band’s best-loved tracks, including The Living Years and Over My Shoulder, along with three brand new songs: One Way, What Would You Do and the new single Out Of The Blue, which can be listened to below. The Deluxe CD will also include six acoustic tracks: Don’t Know What Came Over Me, The Best Is Yet To Come, The Living Years, Beggar On A Beach Of Gold, Another Cup Of Coffee and Over My Shoulder.

Mike Freeman ZonaVibe thrives on its multicultural beat. Initial dry runs of the music started late spring with the onset of full-fledged rehearsals beginning late summer into the fall. The music was recorded with an exciting new group of musicians in early October and the remaining months of the year were spent mixing. The recording will soon be mastered and my friend Anthony Picco has begun work on some interesting cover art. Finishing everything up, manufacturing CDs, and making promo videos still needs to be done, but everything is looking good for a spring release of this new music. It’s turning out nicely and I can’t wait for everyone to hear.
