Horne, Sutherland, Pavarotti, and Talvela are very strong, as is the Vienna philharmonic and chorus. This is the best recording I have found to date, and I have bought many. It is not quite as good as what I remember hearing as a child, but perhaps that recapture is not possible. Listeners may be aware that the Vienna State Opera Chorus and Vienna Philharmonic recorded the Verdi Requiem in November 1991 with Claudio Abbado, a wonderful recording in its own right. Fans of the Abbado disc, however, will not be disappointed with this much earlier 1967 collaboration. The Vienna State Opera is a very powerful chorus and can almost knock you off your feet when they come at you at full volume. And the Vienna Philharmonic proves that its status as one of the world's great ensembles is hardly a recent honor. Overall, I liked all four soloists.

In biting drama it has never been surpassed, and even though speeds are often measured when compared with his fine studio recordin. uch is the voltage of this later recording that it doesn't sound slower. a recording which even today, can startle by its immediacy of sound. Continue reading the main story. 'quattro pezzi sacri. The Requiem selection is ''Ingemisco,'' sung by Luciano Pavarotti in a 1987 recording conducted by Riccardo Muti. As distinctive as Mr. Pavarotti's sound is there, I hark back to another first impression. My introduction to his brilliant tone came in the Solti recording of the Requiem from 1968. It is good to be reminded of that boundless promise after Mr. Pavarotti roundly embarrassed himself in the work four years ago with Met forces at Carnegie Hall. The work of the other soloists, especially Joan Sutherland and Marilyn Horne, is also excellent.
