Album · 2010 · 12 Songs. Shearwater began hinting at this slow-moving ethereal grind several albums ago and 2010’s The Golden Archipelago serves as the final act of a trilogy begun with 2006’s Palo Santo and further explored with 2008’s Rook that brings that concept of island inhabitation to musical fruition. Meridian begins things with the solemn pulse of Peter Gabriel’s most pastoral work. Black Eyes sends Jonathan Meiburg’s atmospheric vocals (think Mark Hollis in latter-day Talk Talk) into the lonely atmosphere. Landscape At Speed furthers that feeling of the human spirit hurdling towards an endless horizon.
Based on The Golden Archipelago, Shearwater are perfectly served by the medium. The record has just a couple of tracks that would be especially striking outside of their context on the LP, and nothing on the level of the huge highs of 2008's Rook, "Snow Leopard" and "Rooks". But it's still thoroughly captivating and confident- and one of the best recent examples of effective sequencing. The only parts of the album that don't feel quite as balanced as their surroundings are "God Made Me", which lacks the fluency of the record's other songs and weighs down the middle a bit, and the final two tracks: "Uniforms" is okay on its own, but its extreme dynamic range and slow start leaves the already wispy closer "Missing Islands".
On 2008’s magnificent Rook, Shearwater finally delivered on the promise of previous albums with a taut, hook-filled batch of art rock singles that were as emotionally powerful as they were melodically sound. For their sixth full-length offering, Jonathan Meiburg and company have crafted an ambitious, occasionally maddening ode to the natural world that owes more than a little tip of the hat to mid-'70s Peter Gabriel and the quieter moments of Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut.

The Golden Archipelago, Shearwater’s sixth release, sticks with the plot. But whereas the ethereal solemnity of its previous album, Rook, was manifest in memorable hooks, the 37-minute Archipelago meanders through its own foggy-graveyard atmospherics. It’s all part of the story.
Shearwater, "The Golden Archipelago" (Matador) Release Date: February 23, 2010. While the Austin band Shearwater's 2008 album "Rook" was thematically inspired by birds, 2010's "The Golden Archipelago" takes on the idea of islands, both literally and conceptually.
