Harlem Stride Piano appeared towards the end of 1910's when jazz was expanding in Harlem. Richer than ragtime before, stride piano offered more freedom with sounds, more flexibility in the game and came mainly under improvisation. It is a self-sufficient style of game because it fills all the sound space and it is also very visual. As a real "rythm box", the left hand alternates with flexibility between basses and agreements, while the right hand weaves a series of improvisations and variations on the empty space of the keyboard
Stride Piano: Bottom-End Jazz Born out of Harlem in the 1920s, stride pianists took the basic left-hand "oompah" rhythm of ragtime, but played it with more swing and complexity, while the right hand played the melody and the ever-increasing improvisations upon it. James Price Johnson (February 1, 1894 – November 17, 1955) was an American pianist and composer. A pioneer of the stride style of jazz piano, he was one of the most important pianists who bridged the ragtime and jazz eras, and, with Jelly Roll Morton, one of the two most important catalysts in the evolution of ragtime piano into jazz. As such, he was a model for Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, and Fats Waller.
Harlem Stride Piano, stride piano, commonly abbreviated to stride, is a jazz piano style that was developed in the large cities of the US East Coast, mainly New York City, during the 1920s and 1930s. The left hand characteristically plays a four-beat pulse with a single bass note, octave, seventh or tenth interval on the first and third beats, and a chord on the second and fourth beats. Some younger pianists have transcribed display pieces note for note from early recordings James P. Johnson (1891–1955), known as the "Father of Stride," created this style of jazz piano along with fellow pianists Willie "The Lion" Smith (1893-1973), Thomas "Fats" Waller (1904–1943) and Luckey Roberts (1893-1968).
