The album consists of live radio transcripts recorded during 1948 and 1949 and was released in 1969 by Big Band Landmarks (Volumes X-XI). As bop surpassed swing by the late 1940s, James was surprisingly open to its influence.

The other release, At The Hollywood Palladium, recorded in January 1954 & is the complete opposite - this was a very swinging and successful big band, especially with the addition of Bernard "Buddy" Rich in the drum chair. This recording marks the first commercial release from James with Buddy in the band. He loved the interaction with His dancing patrons. and often pointed out how unprofessional it was to play music at the wrong tempo in a venue where people come to dance. Palladium party always makes me want to trip the light fantastic, just listen to the georgeous 'please take a letter Miss Brown'. I can't get enough of listening to Harry James' trumpet playing.
