The Weight of the World is the seventh studio album by American thrash metal band Metal Church. It was released in 2004 through the Steamhammer/SPV label. This album marks the beginning of Metal Church's third major line-up, with the addition of Ronny Munroe (vocals), Jay Reynolds (guitar), and Steve Unger (bass). This album is also the last to feature Kirk Arrington on drums. It is hailed by critics and fans alike as Metal Church's comeback album.

That codification, combined with many bands’ tough-as-nails demeanors, marked by scowls and black clothing, helped metal become a lifestyle that transcended the bands onstage.

But rather than crumble under the weight of expectation, Slipknot grabbed the opportunity to make their presence felt again, and this time there would be no mercy and absolutely no fucks given. We’d just flown home and Paul and I took a day off and then went directly to his brother’s place, and we set up our gear and started writing, now former drummer Joey Jordison recalled upon Iowa’s 10th anniversary in 2011. When Slipknot released their first proper album in 1999, the nu metal scene of the mid-to-late 90s was reaching its commercial peak but was, perhaps inevitably, running out of creative steam.

Surely that must count for something, and with the realization that 2004's The Weight of the World amazingly celebrates the group's 20th anniversary (even though it's only their seventh studio album in all that time), there's at least some cause for celebration - right? Well, if truth be told, that'll depend on the listener

After all, this heavy metal offshoot has branched out in countless different directions since it stormed onto the scene circa 1983, and many of the subsequent metallic sub-genres it helped spawn along the way - death metal, black metal, metalcore, you name it - are now often intertwined and confused with the original style. So as we sorted through the potential candidates, a certain sonic purity wound up rising to the top, which meant a lot of '80s stalwarts made the cut, but also some modern day purveyors of thrash's fundamental traits
