His compositional style, much like his odd, fractured and angular piano playing, was deceptively simple and repetitive, full of endlessly circular progressions that seemed to almost intersect themselves at whim, ending up more like auditory puzzle boxes than anything resembling a jazz standard

The Composer is a collection featuring previously issued Thelonious Monk recordings made during his six-year (1962-1968) stint with Columbia Records. The spotlight is on Monk performing his own works in a variety of contexts and settings ranging from solo piano to fully orchestrated - in the studio as well as in front of an audience. It has been said that no one truly understood Monk but Monk. His ability to reinvent his music is staggering. The brief period that he spent recording with legendary producer Teo Macero is generally accepted as a time of reflection for Monk.

Misterioso is a 1958 live album by American jazz ensemble the Thelonious Monk Quartet. By the time of its recording, pianist and bandleader Thelonious Monk had overcome an extended period of career difficulties and achieved stardom with his residency at New York's Five Spot Café, beginning in 1957. He returned there the following year for a second stint with his quartet, featuring drummer Roy Haynes, bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik, and tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin.
