Sombre Romantic is the debut studio album from Australian gothic metal band Virgin Black. The album was originally released in a very limited pressing within Australia only by Crestfallen Records. It was then released on 12 February 2001 on The End Records in the United States and in Europe by German label Massacre Records. Martin Newcomb used to own/operate the Museum of Synthesizer Technology (in Ware, Hertfordshire, England) where he owned and maintained over 300 synthesizers. For various reasons he closed the museum, sold off more than 200 of the synthesizers and put the remainder in a custom-built studio. That is where this music was recorded. The synth shown on the cover is a unique, Analogue Systems Phoenix with over 200 modules mounted in 32 racks.
