These sides were cut on May Day 1926 with backing by her Novelty Band - trombonist Tom Edwards, clarinetist Clarence Adams, pianist Stanley Miller, and banjoist Herman Gibson. She is accompanied by pianist Lemuel Fowler on the jazzy "How'm I Doin'? (Hey, Hey!)" and "Whip It to a Jelly. Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 4 (1926-1927). The other potent surprise in this package is "My Man Blues," a third duet with Bessie Smith (for their earlier collaborations, see volume one). Had it been issued at the time, the flipside would have given us their version of "Down Old Georgia Way," but that recording is not included here and may have vanished entirely. Unfortunately the two singers would never work together again after getting into a heated argument during which Bessie slugged Clara. Although each volume in this series is excellent and well worth investigating, volume three can be particularly satisfying,.

Chronological Classics was a French compact disc reissue label. The original owner Gilles Pétard intended to release the complete master takes of all jazz and swing artists that were issued on 78 rpm records. By the time the label suspended operations in July 2008, its scope had extended into the LP era. Pétard also started a parallel label, R&B Classics, whose releases follow on from the jazz listing, to reissue postwar rhythm & blues recordings.
