The Proximity Effect (Nada Surf album). The Proximity Effect is the second album by alternative rock band, Nada Surf. It was released on MarDev in 1998. Frontman Matthew Caws attributed the quality of the album production to the band having been dropped by their label, Elektra Records. Finding no radio-friendly single on this album, Elektra asked the band to write a hit, and had them record covers of other artists, trying to push Why Are You So Mean To Me? as the first single.

Nada Surf is an American alternative rock band which currently consists of Matthew Caws (guitar, vocals), Ira Elliot (drums), Doug Gillard (guitar) and Daniel Lorca (bass, backing vocals). Based in New York City and formed in the 1990s, Nada Surf continues to tour. Their eighth album, You Know Who You Are, was a featured release on NPR in February 2016. In 1992, the band was formed by Matthew Caws and Daniel Lorca.

Nada Surf actually completed The Proximity Effect in 1998, whereupon it was released in Europe, supposedly "selling briskly and garnering critical acclaim" (this according to the press release; I guess I'll take their word for it). But after it tanked in the . Elektra wasted no time dropping them. Nada Surf eventually regained the rights and have now released it on Mardev, their new self-run label. The Proximity Effect opens interestingly enough, with a guitar somehow manipulated to resemble bagpipes and quick drums like a skipped heartbeat.
