Collage is Italian Symphonic prog rock band Le Orme�s second album. I enjoyed their debut album partially but I wasn�t too impressed. It�s a pleasant album but not very challenging. Things have changed since the very sixties dominated debut album and Le Orme has definitely stepped into the seventies. The music is very influenced by Emerson Lake & Palmer with lots of classical keyboard runs but Le Orme has not entirely left the soft sixties rock behind

Collage is Le Orme's first try at progressive rock, after one album of psychedelic pop (Ad Gloriam), and a bunch of singles released as far back as 1967 (many which appeared on L'Aurora Della Orme).

Originally intending to name themselves Le Ombre, a literal translation of The Shadows, they ultimately decided on the similar-sounding Le Orme. The band's early work evoked a feel somewhere between beat and psychedelic rock, similar to what was coming out of the United Kingdom at the time. In the spring of 1971 Le Orme recorded their second studio album, Collage. Thanks to its promotion through the RAI radio program Per voi giovani, the album was quickly successful, earning a top 10 placing in the Italian charts. This was followed up with Uomo di pezza in 1972, which topped the Italian charts. Uomo di pezza also generated a hit single, "Gioco di bimba", and the band toured Italy in December 1972 with.

It is also the first album to feature the trio's progressive rock sound, albeit in an embryonic stage. As such, it is a mixed bag. On the one hand you get pompous, excessive keyboard workouts that owe a lot to the Nice ("Collage," "Sguardo Verso Il Cielo"), down to orchestral arrangements. On the other hand, you also get songs like "Era Inverno" and "Morte di un Fiore," both typical Italian prog songs (with acoustic guitar), both heralding what will become Le Orme's classic sound.

Collage is an album by the Italian progressive rock band Le Orme. It was released in 1971. It is the first progressive-like album by the band, who had previously recorded only the beat-oriented Ad Gloriam of 1968. The album begins with the instrumental "Collage", then continues with the sad song "Era inverno" ("It Was Winter"), a conversation between a man and a harlot. The third song, "Cemento armato" ("Reinforced Concrete"), is introduced by piano and describes the situation in the cities.

Collage (1971) is the real "first" Le Orme LP, after two previous albums of beat music. It is also the first album to feature the trio's progressive rock sound, albeit in an embryonic stage. If Collage represents a large step from Ad Gloriam (Le Orme' s 1969 debut), it's nothing compared to what Uomo di Pezza (1972) will represent in terms of evolution.
