The strength of their material allowed them to replace their sorely missed rhythm section on their first two records with standout players Stu Shader on drums and Jeff Shelton on bass.

And yet, Cold Gas Giant doesn’t sound disjointed or like a collection of singles. Rather, it holds together extremely well as a single work. The jangly Signs stands out as an obvious choice as a single here, assuming there is still such a thing as a single. The opening seconds of The Same Reaction bring White Album era Beatles to mind. The chorus is one huge hook that grabs you and won’t let go. I couldn’t get it out of my head after a couple of listens.

A gas giant is a giant planet composed mainly of hydrogen and helium. Jupiter and Saturn are the gas giants of the Solar System. The term "gas giant" was originally synonymous with "giant planet", but in the 1990s it became known that Uranus and Neptune are really a distinct class of giant planet, being composed mainly of heavier volatile substances (which are referred to as "ices").

To my understanding, the San Fran-based Trip Wire had already carved out a power pop reputation for themselves, and with Shelton on deck that proposition has been further cemented on the band’s sophomore long-player, Cold Gas Giants. In fact, the selections here the man in question belly’s up to the mic for, I’m Not the Enemy and Growing Old bear a discernibly crunchy, riff-rock penchant. To a certain extent, Shelton’s contributions stand in contrast to much of the remainder of CGG, an album that finds this combo finagling with various accoutrements from horns to a string section.
