Lou Reed is the debut solo studio album by American musician Lou Reed, released in April 1972 by RCA Records, two years after he left the Velvet Underground.

This is another concept album from Reed that will not be for everyone, obviously. Another work of ART that was and is misunderstood by many, just like LULU. I love it and don't care what the naysayers say or think. I have read what Reed thinks of writers like Poe, William Inge, Hubert Selby J. Tennessee Williams and others and I say yes!!! great American writers that many have forgotten or don't know about. That's too bad, they were the greatest and they have influenced some sensitive and brave artists, especially Lou Reed. The Raven" comes across as Lou Reed's attempt at a Broadway musical. One can imagine the various voice talents taking the stage, doing their thing, lights down, the next scene being set up, then lights up again. I would be curious if this is exactly what is happening with the current Lou Reed tour. The sound engineering has that sort of feel to it.

Another year, another Lou Reed compilation. Or perhaps more accurately - come the early 21st century, another year, another few Lou Reed compilations. Yes, the pace has picked up quite a bit as of recently, as evidenced by the appearance of such sets as 2000's Very Best of Lou Reed. True, most longtime Reed fans will admit that his '70s output was probably the best of his solo career, but still, this can't be considered a definitive best-of when such albums as New York are completely skipped over. Of course, there's no denying that there are some truly great tracks here - "Perfect Day," "Vicious," "Ocean," "Berlin," "Satellite of Love," (and you've got to admire any Reed compilation that includes the Blue Mask obscurity, "The Gun").
