Faith is the debut solo studio album by the English singer George Michael, released on 30 October 1987 by Columbia Records and Epic Records. The album has won several awards, including the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1989. It received a diamond extreme certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Faith spawned six top-five singles that substantially helped it dominate the charts in 1987 and 1988.

You should change your name to George Faith". To Be a Lover" was issued on Island's Black Swan label, and proved more popular than any of the previous Jamaican versions of the song. The Jamaican release of the disco (12-inch single) featured a mix lasting nearly twelve minutes. Island issued "I've Got The Groove" as a follow-up, and a third disco 45 was issued later. Lawrence recorded a second album with Perry at the Black Ark in 1978, Working on the Guideline, although the album was not released, with only a few tracks being released, the singles "Guideline" and "Don't Be Afraid", Lawrence now recording original material with more "conscious" themes. Lawrence was also due to go on a tour that Perry was.

Jamaican soul singer. The Jamaican singer George Faith, who has died of cancer aged 56, was best known for the album To Be A Lover (1977), which he recorded with producer Lee "Scratch" Perry. Faith covered American soul and was also a fine songwriter. He was born Earl George Lawrence in Rae Town, then a small fishing community south of Kingston, but later a notorious ghetto. The material was col lected on the To Be A Lover album, which is ranked by many as the greatest set Perry cut with a solo vocalist. A follow-up album and a tour fell through when the producer had a breakdown, and the album One And Only (1978), hastily issued by Phil Pratt, was not very successful. Faith subsequently recorded the albums Loving Something, Since I Met You Baby and Happy Anniversary with producer Alvin GG Ranglin.

Michael arranged and produced the album himself, and the familiarity of many of these songs can obscure his skills in those departments - close listening reveals his knack for shifting elements in and out of the mix and adding subtle embellishments when a little emphasis or variety is needed. Though Faith couldn't completely shake Michael's bubblegum image in some quarters, the album's themes were decidedly adult.
