The basic two types of manic-depressives are unipolar and bipolar. Bipolar is a much more sever case in which moods can change drastically faster. Going from a perfect high to the lowest that one can go, even to the point of suicide. These illnesses can come from genetics, biochemical (chemical imbalance), and environmental factors

An unusual case of a manic-depressive patient has been quoted by Jenner, et a. 1967), whose manic phase lasted for 24 hours and was then followed by a depressed stage which also continued for 24 hours. This cycle continued for 11 years. Bunney, Murphy, Goodwin and Borge (1972) have also cited the case of a woman patient who shifted between mania and depression every 48 hours for a period of 2 years. Such cases are not common though. They have cited a case named Mary, W; 12 years old who had her first attack at the age of 10 years. The depression which started at the first stage continued for 7 months after which the manic stage appeared and she became highly elated, talked excessively and had flight of ideas. This was followed by a depressive stage for 2 weeks and then it switched on to manic stage for 4 months alternatively.

But why do many manic depressives become entrepreneurs? Why is it that manic depression has been terms ‘The CEO’s Disease’? First of all, it’s important to recognise that clinically these types probably don’t meet the diagnostic criteria necessary to be considered true manic depressives. Rather they are what psychologists are calling ‘soft bipolars’. Those are the types who simply tend to veer from one extreme to the other – either being very excitable or a little down.
