Totentanz (English: Dance of the Dead): Paraphrase on Dies irae, or Danse macabre . 26, is the name of a symphonic piece for solo piano and orchestra by Franz Liszt, which is notable for being based on the Gregorian plainchant melody Dies Irae as well as for daring stylistic innovations. The piece was originally planned in 1838 and completed in 1849; it was then revised twice, in 1853 and 1859.

Liszt: Piano Concerti 1 & 2, Totentanz, Hungarian Fantasy Essential Classics. 2. 1 In E-Flat Major: II. Quasi adagio - Allegretto vivace - Allegro animato. 3. 1 In E-Flat Major: III. Allegro marziale animato. This recording is by far the best recording of the Liszt pieces for piano and orchestra. I have purchased other recordings, but none come close to the fire, virtuousity, drama, and emotion that these performances convey. The Totentanz is taken at quarter note light speed, so hang on!

Notes

First release in a series of 26 volumes, the proceeds of which were used for the building costs of the "Nieuwe Muziekzaal" in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Some copies were mailed out to clients of "Riem + Honig Papier B.V." (the company that provided the cardboard for the production of the gatefold covers) and contained an official letter from the company, with information about the record and the upcoming series. A scan of this letter has been added to the image section for clarity.

This first volume in the series was sponsored by the Dutch employment bureau "Content" [see images].

Inside gatefold: "These records are re-pressings of a recording which previously appeared under the Aristocrate label. Recorded in De Doelen Rotterdam 1975-76."
