Hogwood, who was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1989, was a leading light in making pre-Baroque and Baroque music concert hall staples - and he helped transform the way musicians of all stripes approached such scores. 10, 1941, in Nottingham, England, Hogwood began his Cambridge University studies in 1960. In 1973, Hogwood founded the Academy of Ancient Music, which he also conducted, and with whom he made more than 200 recordings, including the first complete cycle of Mozart's symphonies on period instruments. In 1986, Hogwood joined Boston's venerable Handel and Haydn Society - one of America's oldest continuously performing arts organizations - remaking it into a historically informed performance ensemble. Hogwood led Handel and Haydn until 2001, at which point he was named conductor laureate.
Album · 1990 · 5 Songs. Italian Music of the Medici Court. Christopher Hogwood & Early Music Consort of London. 5. The Spanish Courts of the 16th Century. Released: Oct 17, 1990. 2005 Nonesuch Records. More By Christopher Hogwood.
Hogwood's set, however, contains everything of Mozart's symphonic or near-symphonic music - excepting most opera overtures, dances, and divertimenti - as was understood at the time of its release in 1997; it contains 19 discs originally packaged in smaller sets and recorded between 1978 and 1985. However, Hogwood does manage to avoid the preciousness that typifies many recorded performances of Mozart's symphonies and his interpretations never sound broad or overinflated.
