Stylistically, A Matter of Lif. s a near-perfect match with the Penguin Café Orchestra of old. It is undeniably easy-listening background music, but of the best possible kind: it can be a passive soundtrack but generally stands up just as well to direct attention. There are no stand-out 'hits' – no 'Music for a Found Harmonium' or 'Telephone and Rubber Band' – and the whole can feel a bit lacking in substance, but in terms of its aims – sort of a love letter to the original PCO music – it’s a definite success

Arthur Jeffes, son of Penguin Cafe Orchestra maestro Simon, produces a set of his own compositions in his father's style, to a certain amount of success, writes Robin Denselow. With the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Simon Jeffes created some of the most unusual and delightful music of the last 40 years, an "imaginary folk" style that mixed classical and global influences with the patterns and repetition of systems music, with predictably quirky instrumentation. With his Music from the Penguin Cafe project two years ago, Arthur set out to revive those compositions, and now with his Penguin Cafe band he has recorded an album of his own compositions in much the same style.
