First Utterance is the debut album of the British progressive rock band Comus. It was released in 1971, with the opening song "Diana" being released as a single. The cover artwork was drawn in ball point pen by Roger Wootton, lead singer and songwriter of the band. The centrefold artwork was painted by guitarist Glenn Goring.

Ultimately, "First Utterance" is a fabulously creative album, especially given that it was written in 1970. In fact, it is likely to have influenced Crimson's "Wake of Poseidon," "Lizard" and "Islands. ) It is admittedly a bit weird at first listen, especially Wootton's vocals, since he uses all kinds of bizarre inflections and vocal tricks. I get the feeling that "First Utterance" is based on "A Maske" (Comus) by John Milton, and reading that poem will set the scene very well for this album, which would provide a good background for such a "Maske". Overall, the music has a sublime and crisp improvisatory feel, and if "World Music" is your bag, then this is a real find.
