Big Fun is a compilation album by American jazz musician Miles Davis. It was released by Columbia Records on April 19, 1974, and compiled recordings Davis had made in sessions between 1969 and 1972. Largely ignored in 1974, it was reissued on August 1, 2000, by Columbia and Legacy Records with additional material, which led to a critical reevaluation. Big Fun presents music from three different phases of Miles Davis's early-seventies "electric" period.

Biography by William Ruhlmann. The epitome of cool, an eternally evolving trumpeter who repeatedly changed the course of jazz between the 1950s and '90s.
Miles Davis is the one jazz figure of the postwar era who had, and still has, the larger-than-life quality of a pop star. Other jazz artists, of course, became legends (Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, et., but Miles, like Picasso or Dylan, had a mystique rooted not just in his genius but in his cult of personality. So any documentary about Miles Davis that really wants to take him all in has to grapple with each of those dimensions - the lyrical jazz genius, the midnight pop star, the drugs and domestic violence, the stubborn inner light - and demonstrate how, exactly, they fit together. Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool does just that.
Their first album, The New Miles Davis Quintet, was just the beginning of a prolific period in which they would record enough material for over five albums in one year alone. They worked out a compromise that allowed Davis to record for both labels: (Cookin’, Relaxin’, Workin’, and Steamin’ for Prestige and Round About Midnight for Columbia were all released in 1956. After the recordings, Davis went to Europe to work
Soon, Miles Davis left his modal jazz roots to dabble in yet another subgenre of jazz - avant guarde. Following in the footsteps of old friend Charles Mingus, who had helped kickstart the genre with the release of Mingus Ah Um back in '59, Davis went on to release Sorcerer, Nefertiti and, Miles in the Sky and Miles Smiles in '67. All of which were received quite well, but Miles Smiles is seen as a standout. Miles Smiles is often regarded a one of Davis' best works of the 60s and possibly his best work with the second Quartet.
