Betty Harris (born 1939 in Orlando, Florida, United States) is an American soul singer. Her recording career in the 1960s produced three hit singles that made the US Billboard R&B and Billboard Hot 100 charts: "Cry to Me" (1963), "His Kiss" (1964) and "Nearer to You" (1967)

During that time Betty Harris went on tour with Otis Redding and Joe Simon (and also Bettye Swann and Carla Thomas), the ill-fated tour that was cut short after the Redding plane crash. In the CD booklet you will see photos of Betty Harris with luminaries such as Sam Cooke, Tammi Terrell, "Little" Stevie Wonder, and even Muhammad Ali! Despite these famous friends, and Toussaint's magic touch, she never scored any big hits and retired from the music business in 1970, wanting to raise a family and study business

Then in 2001, her daughter found several Betty Harris fan sites on the Web, prompting the singer to join a soul mailing list to announce her present whereabouts. Weeks later, Harris performed at New Orleans' annual Ponderosa Stomp. In 2007, she released what was, amazingly, her first real studio album, the Jon Tiven-produced Intuition. During the following decade, the Soul Jazz label reissued her 1965-1969 sides as The Lost Queen of New Orleans Soul.

From 1965 to 1969 Harris recorded under the direction of the great New Orleans producer and songwriter Allen Toussaint, who wrote every last one of the 20 Harris sides on this disc that were cut during the collaboration. The presence of an ace producer-songwriter is often what's needed to make a good, but not great, vocalist like Harris into something special. While the Toussaint material here is satisfying New Orleans soul, it didn't get Harris over the hump commercially (although "Nearer to You" was an R&B hit), or endure as top-line classic soul.
