Jeu de cartes (Card Game) is a ballet in three "deals", composed by Igor Stravinsky in 1936–37 with libretto by the composer in collaboration with M. Malaieff (a friend of Stravinsky's eldest son Théodore Stravinsky), and with choreography by George Balanchine. The ballet was premiered by the American Ballet at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City on 27 April 1937, with the composer conducting. The European premier was on 13 October 1937 at the Dresden Staatsoper.
Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky ComSE (/strəˈvɪnski/; Russian: И́горь Фёдорович Страви́нский, IPA: ; 17 June 1882 – 6 April 1971) was a Russian-born composer, pianist, and conductor. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity.

The Stravinsky ballet retrospective at this year's Proms has triggered a corresponding flurry of CD issues and reissues of his dance music, says Tim Ashley. In Jeu de Cartes, things turn postmodern, as Stravinsky, ever the joker, throws allusions to Rossini, Ravel, Delibes and (possibly) Debussy into the mix. Agon, meanwhile, dazzlingly adds a French baroque layer to its already potent combination of Russian form and rigorous serial technique. Both works suit Volkov's sinewy, precise style down to the ground, and are quite thrillingly played. BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.

Concerning Le Sacre, Stravinsky outdoes Karajan, Ozawa, Thomas, Boulez, and that awful "Fantasia" sequence with the dinosaurs from 1940! What is so special about hearing Le Sacre as Stravinksy envisioned it is that he is in charge; he is indicating how he wants it to be played. The Glorification of the Chosen One" is the most exciting moment in the score, and Stravinsky conducts it with fiery passion. The Sacrificial Dance" is also played very well. I was very pleased with the recording.
Incidentally, those who get this set and want to hear some of those earlier recordings by the composer should seek out Igor Stravinsky: Composer and Conductor, Vol. 1 on the Andante label, which delves into his earlier interpretations of a lot of the music here).
