Whatever and Ever Amen begins with the impossibly rowdy piano pop of One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces, and announces the second Ben Folds Five record like a smack in the face. Brick packs an emotional punch, detailing Folds’ high school girlfriend’s abortion over delicate, pensive progressions, and Song for the Dumped ups the energy with its punk sneer. Evaporated closes the curtain with Folds’ existential malaise at the forefront, his voice supported by poignant instrumentation accentuated with dramatic strings. Whatever and Ever Amen Ben Folds Five.

When Ben Folds Five were recording this song at his Chapel Hill, North Carolina home, friends who heard it play weren't enthused. To do a song that was just so simple and commercial-sounding was bumming the peanut gallery out," Folds recalled to Spinner. They said, 'What's that song? Is that going to really be on the album?' 'Why, you don't like it?' 'Well, was it the record label's idea?'
