Redirected from The Crack (album)). The Crack is The Ruts first album, released in 1979 and containing the UK hit singles: "Babylon's Burning" (Number seven on the UK chart in June 1979) and "Something That I Said" (No. 29 in September 1979). The white-reggae "Jah War", which was written in the aftermath of the Southall unrest and the over-use of force by the Metropolitan Police Service's Special Patrol Group in 1979, was also released as a single but didn't make the UK chart.

The Ruts, Ruts DC are an English reggae-influenced punk rock band, notable for the 1979 UK Top 10 hit "Babylon's Burning", and an earlier single "In a Rut", which was not a hit but was highly regarded and regularly played by BBC Radio 1 disc jockey John Peel. The B-side was "The Crack", a lighthearted mini-pastiche of their debut album, recorded in a number of musical styles. It peaked at No. 43 in the UK Singles Chart. Virgin issued a second album later in 1980, a compilation of singles, demos and live tracks entitled Grin & Bear It. The three live tracks – ". "Babylon's Burning" and "Society" had been recorded for Chorus, a French TV show, in January of that year

Thus, The Crack was one blindingly original album, far removed from its contemporaries. At the core, the quartet's sound was based primarily on '70s rock, played fast and hard, bringing them into the sphere of the street punks, an evolving genre later tagged Oi!, and eventually mutating into both speed metal and hardcore. The album features a clutch of headbanging pogo-til-you-puke blasts of fury, anthemic shout-alongs one and all. But the Ruts were capable of much more than simplistic punk-rockers in a metal mode

Urgent and driving, The Ruts’ debut album, ‘The Crack’, was an impressively diverse offering merging reggae influences and politically charged anthems. Published on. January 25, 2019. Listen to The Crack right now. To the wider public, The Ruts appeared to have materialised from the ether, but in reality they were a band with a colourful past. Ironically, guitarist Paul Fox and charismatic vocalist Malcolm Owen first met in a hippie commune on the Welsh isle of Anglesey, during the early 70s. Drummer Dave Ruffy, meanwhile, learned his craft playing in an East End ska/rocksteady outfit, The Star-Keys, while still in his teens, and he loved reggae, as did The Ruts’ bassist, John Segs Jennings. We all had eclectic tastes

Dope For Guns, 02:11.

The Crack, The Ruts’ debut album, is an essential component of any self-respecting punk collection. Featuring the singles Babylon’s Burning, Something That I Said and Jah War, it was the only album completed by vocalist Malcolm Owen before his tragic, heroin-related death in July 1980. Though overshadowed by Ian Curtis’s suicide earlier in the summer, Owen’s loss was as devastating a blow to a floundering, Oi!-enamoured punk scene as Curtis’s was to the nascent post-punk milieu
