DJ Sprinkles serves alternate, killer mixes of his massive Fresh Insights session with Mark Fell (and Tony Benn).

Back in 2012, DJ Sprinkles and Mark Fell surprised everyone with the release of The Complete Spiral, a collaborative 12" on the former's Comatonse label that brandished three sublime exercises in classicist deep house. It was made all the more distinctive by the usage of a vocal sample from '80s Trade Unionist Arthur Scargill, perhaps a knowing nod to all the deep house producers over the years that have sampled that Martin Luther King speech.

First up is "Insights", which sounds positively sumptuous with a classically Sprinkles-style house groove accentuated by the glossy synth tones you can hear in plenty of Mark Fell's output.

I just wish Mark Fell and Sprinkles did more house tracks together. Complete Spiral is in my top 3 deep house tracks of all time and I don't see that changing any time soon. The sort of rigid but complex percussion on top of that ultra-bouncy bassline, with Fell's trademark melodic flourishes, it's all in perfect harmony and meant for infinity. Big words but this track is that good. My copy is getting a bit muddy though :/ Reply Notify me Helpful.

Tracklist A – Insights (9:08) B – Fresh (10:13). More than two years since their union on the ‘Complete Spiral’ EP (. 21), which notably placed . leader Arthur Scargill on a New York-style deep house groove, they reprise that formula to spellbinding degrees on ‘Fresh Insights EP 1’. In a knowing nod to Larry Heard and countless other producers deployment of that MLK speech, they ally

But Fresh Insights EP 2, which presents two Sprinkles remixes of tracks featured on EP 1, could also refer to the blooming studio partnership of Terre Thaemlitz and Fell. Fell, formerly of glitchy minimalist duo SND, contributes nothing of his experimental aesthetic to Fresh Insights EP 2, but the record's clean contours do at least gesture to this approach. Nevertheless, the record reaffirms both artists' reputation for excellence. On "Fresh (Sprinkles Alt. Mix)," Benn's speech is accompanied by spiralling xylophone notes and fidgety synthetic horns that seem to parp.

DJ Sprinkles, aka Terre Thaemlitz, is a now Tokyo-based producer who, among so much other stuff, released the hugely loved, genre-defining "Midtown 120 Blues" album back in 2009. Mark Fell is the South Yorkshire-based sonic genius known for groundbreaking work as half of SND and is surely one of the most important underground producers of a generation. dj sprinkles - mark fell. Talk about DJ Sprinkles + Mark Fell - Fresh Insights EP 2

Pipet
Does anyone else have a surface noise issue on one channel on the A side?
Dordred
Yes, the problem is on my June 2015 repress.
Xirmiu
I've got the first pressing and no problems with that. Actually sounds great.
Tygrarad
actually all the way on both channels...
Zainian
yeah here...
Danskyleyn
Small repress now available. Keep an eye out!
Realistic
For those that say this EP is exactly like the other Fresh Insights EP are just flat out wrong. Yes, they are similar, but we're talking Sprinkles here -- even the most subtle change counts in his world. EP 2 has an more overall laid back and ambient vibe to it, yet still danceable. Both EP's offer something different and are absolutely worth having. In fact, if you're more of a Sprinkles fan than a Fell fan, I would recommend picking up EP 2 if you're only going to buy one. Great stuff!
greed style
In sound-reconstruction, Minor difference, in feel and buildup: Big difference.. Sprinkles goes on a very deeper take on Insights LOW bassline, more stripped and added light percussion. Heavier bottom on it. Much like...So amaze.. wow..His alternative mix of Fresh is more direct forward and straight to the point burner. While on disc one it breaks down and leaves open the best parts (Bass and Kick) , it just forwards ahead with Tony Benn layered very simple on top. But to me i prefer the original take. The breakdown is just a defining moment for the track.
Nettale
Minimal difference between this EP and EP1 - if you've got one, you really don't need to bother with the other.
Road.to sliver
Very similar to the first e.p. with just that extra 'sprinkling' of Thaemlitz magic. Side A is the pick of the bunch imo.
