Layton enlisted in the Canadian Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged a year later. His family moved to Montreal when he was a year old; when his father died, Layton, just 13, briefly left school to sell household goods door to door before enrolling in high school, where his encounter with Tennyson’s poem The Revenge inspired him to try writing. He earned a degree in agriculture at Macdonald College, where he joined the Young People’s Socialist League.
Irving Layton often recited his works at readings and travelled the world doing so, gaining fame and popularity. Over the course of his life, Irving Layton received many awards and honours for his writing. In 1981, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature by Italy and South Korea.
